I’ll See You In My Dreams

I finally opened up the DVD of “A Concert for George” that I bought back around the beginning of the year, something I’d first encountered on public television a while back. Set one year to the day of George Harrison’s passing, the concert was an incredible gathering of musicians celebrating George’s life in music and song and comedy (thanks to a grizzled assortment of Monty Python alum).

Unofficially hosted by Eric Clapton and Dhani Harrison (whose likeness to his father is uncanny), the concert begins with a concert written by Harrison’s friend and important influence, Ravi Shankar; perhaps the most well-known Sitar player in the world thanks to Harrison’s interest. After Intermission the Monty Python players expose their ribald old classic “Sit on my Face” to the audience packing the Royal Albert Hall. Finally, the concert moves into Harrison’s music that you and I probably know the best. The concert is loving, ever mindful of George and refreshingly absent any bandstanding by individual artists. It’s a very spiritual experience and if you’re a fan of George Harrison you should find a way to experience this concert for yourself.

The music used throughout the DVD’s menus is the song performed by Joe Brown at the end of the concert, the old Louis Armstrong tune “I’ll See You In My Dreams”. Brown’s simple vocals accompanied by the small, cheery and innocent sound of his ukulele seems to strike close to the hearts of everyone on stage. I get the sense that everyone was going to join along in a rollicking version of the song but were stayed by the simple power of his song.

Goodnight George, we’re glad we knew you.

I’ll see you in my dreams
And then I’ll hold you in my dreams
Someone took you right out of my arms
Still I feel the thrill of your charms

Lips that once were mine
Tender eyes that shine
They will light my way tonight
I’ll see you in my dreams

(instrumental break)

Yes I will…see you in my dreams
You know I’ll…hold you in my dreams
I know that…someone took you right out of my arms
But…still I feel the thrill of your charms

I dream of…lips that once were mine
And those…tender eyes that shine
I know…they’ll light my way tonight
When I…see you in my dreams

Yes they will…light my way tonight
Because I’ll…see you in my dreams
